Bible 6
This course is a survey of the Old Testament—Ezra through Malachi. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the Bible’s major content, structure, and themes. Students will also do a character study of the major figures in these books. In addition, students will achieve a greater understanding of the nature of God and his love for us, leading up to the coming of the Messiah. Learning the geographical areas of the world during the writing of the Old Testament will help students better understand ancient world history as well. (Semester Course)
English 6
This course develops skills in three major areas: literature, writing, and speaking. In literature, students continue the study of various literary genres, reading for both comprehension and pleasure. In writing, students study the stages of the writing process in their composition of essays and fully explore narrative, expository, and persuasive writing with a particular emphasis on writing test responses. In addition, students continue their study of the research process and the importance of proper citations. Oral skills are integrated throughout the course, from reading passages aloud in class to making project presentations.
Phenomenon of Language, Part II
This course will continue to build upon the foundation of Phenomenon of Language 5. In conjunction with their Latin study, students will continue work to strengthen their knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary.
European History 6
This course begins with a study of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome, then moves on to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and concludes with the Reformation. Students will review the origins and philosophies of these civilizations, as they learn to recognize how these principles manifest themselves in all facets of society. This course will provide a strong precursor to the introduction of U.S. history.
Math 6 (Students will be tested and placed in the appropriate level)
This course covers integers, decimals, and fractions using the fundamental operations of arithmetic. Pre-algebra is introduced through the study of inverse operations, exponents, graphing, and the use of variables in mathematical expressions and equations. Basic skills are developed for solving problems involving geometry, percent, ratio, scientific notation, number theory, and the metric system. Carefully sequenced lessons develop a broad spectrum of skills and concepts that build upon prior learning.
Pre-Algebra
This course provides students with the necessary tools to be successful in Algebra I. Students will master integers, multi-step equations, and other fundamental algebraic concepts. The course engages students in critical thinking about math concepts previously learned and applies this knowledge to the abstract nature of algebra.
Physical Education 6
This course is designed to introduce a wide variety of sports to students. The purpose of the class is to help students understand the concept of team sports. They will learn the rules, the object of the games, and the fundamentals of each sport. Students will learn teamwork and good sportsmanship, as well as the ability to get along with other classmates, in a competitive atmosphere. The class is also designed to develop motor skills and provide an understanding of the importance of physical exercise to the mental and physical well-being of the individual. (Semester Course)
Earth Science 6
This course is a study of the earth, how it works, its history, and its place in the solar system. The study of earth science breaks down into three major areas: geology, meteorology, and astronomy. Students will explore and experience a variety of areas within the discipline of earth science through the use of reading, research, observation, experimentation, discussion, and application. The WeatherBug service is a great enhancement to our meteorology unit and the tracking of the daily weather on campus throughout the year.
Concert Choir (Grades 6 and 7)
Students will learn more advanced music and begin to sing in parts. The class will continue to work on music reading skills, sight-reading, listening skills, movement activities, ensemble singing, music history, and theory. They will perform throughout the year. (Semester Course)
Introduction to Theater (Grades 6 and 7)
This course will introduce basic acting skills through storytelling and character study. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of expression through words and body, participating in a variety of exercises and forming constructive criticism of actors from clips of theatrical presentations that will be shown in class. Throughout the semester, students will put their new skills to use by performing a wide range of characters in monologues, short skits, and scenes that will be presented in class. (Semester Course)
Visual Arts (Grades 6 and 7)
Students in middle school art class will have the opportunity to use, develop, and deepen the concepts and skills acquired in lower grades. The elements of art and principles of design will be applied to art projects as students continue to explore different mediums, master specific techniques, and create unique expressions of their own. To enrich student knowledge, art history will be incorporated into instruction. (Semester Course)
