Starting in Kindergarten, each grade level has Spanish class twice weekly for 30-45 minute sessions. Classes are taught entirely in Spanish.
The students develop conversational (in grades K-4), reading (in grades 2-4) and writing (in grades 3-4) Spanish language skills. The goal of each unit of study, in addition to vocabulary development, is to create several lines of dialogue comprised of questions and answers, which the children eventually memorize by the end of the unit.
Play is an important part of the learning experience in our classes. Children listen to puppets model dialogues; they sing songs and learn counting and other games to accomplish the lesson objectives.
Each year, the curriculum includes a section, taught in English, on the culture, geography and history of a Spanish-speaking country or area. Kindergarten - second grade study Mexico; third grade studies Central America; and fourth grade concentrates on South America.
