Fourth students begin Latin in Fourth Grade, when they have a firm basis of English grammar, vocabulary and history, and the culture of Rome and the Romans. The study of Latin, even though it is no longer spoken, contributes to a strong education for several reasons.

Latin was the principal language of Western Europe for hundreds of years and was used to create much of the thought and literature that was part of this golden age of Western civilization. Latin also trains students to think precisely. It is known for its precise expression, making it the perfect language for law and government.

Latin also helps students understand grammatical relationships. It serves as an aid to appreciating the ancient Roman civilization as a source of modern culture. And it is also helpful to learning modern languages, particularly Romance languages such as Spanish

Students at Fourth are taught to develop a knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary as one basis of understanding the English language and the means of expressing ideas. They also experience the pleasure of learning word histories, variant meaning and uses, and the enjoyment of the nuance of language.
