At Fourth School, we believe that even in the computer age handwriting that is both legible and beautiful is important, can foster appreciation for words and language, and should be awarded an honored place in the curriculum.

Our penmanship curriculum begins at the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten levels, where students participate in many activities aimed at developing their small hand and finger muscles (cutting, drawing, painting, pasting, threading beads, fingerplays, etc).

Manuscript penmanship begins in Kindergarten, starting with instruction in the correct formation of numerals and upper case/capital letters and progressing to lower case letters. Students learn cursive penmanship beginning in the second semester of Second Grade and are expected to fully write in cursive during the second semester of Third Grade.
