Mathematics is the study of numerical and spatial law that God established at creation.

Our students master its concepts, language and computation processes in a carefully sequenced program of study using the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley Mathematics series. And because math is foundational to learning and to daily life, it is intentionally integrated with many other subjects.

Our math curriculum is designed around five basic principles.

Appropriate Challenge

Our goal is for all students to be appropriately challenged, at both ends of the spectrum, with ample teacher support and materials to constantly assess and properly individualize instruction.

As a result, mathematics instruction is scheduled for all grades from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon each day so that each student can be easily moved for instruction at his or her “appropriate challenge” level.

Integrated Instruction

There is no single method of teaching mathematics that can be considered right for all students. Our instruction encompasses a blending of theories that includes the best of what educators know from a variety of traditional as well as innovative methodologies.

The math program at Fourth includes a heavy emphasis on the development of a firm scope and sequence of basic skills requiring memorization, drill and practice, as well as a number of interrelated experiences in real world settings that encourage students to value the mathematical enterprise and mathematical habits of the mind.

Since math is more than a collection of important concepts and skills to be mastered, the math curriculum includes methods of investigating, reasoning and communicating meaning. Students are encouraged to explore, guess and even make and correct errors so that they gain confidence in their ability to solve complex problems.

Manipulative Exploration

An integrated approach to math includes not only the important memorization of basic facts, exploration and discovery, but also the frequent use of math manipulative instructional materials to ensure conceptual understanding of the skills studied.

Our school is equipped with a wide variety of manipulatives.

Rich Problem-Solving Environment

Problem-solving is a hallmark of Fourth's math curriculum.

Problem-solving is central to any excellent, comprehensive mathematics curriculum so that students can explore and create new solutions and discoveries over the course of their lives.

As our students learn to use mathematics in problem solving, they sometimes work together collaboratively on problems and projects to foster engaged discussion and the testing of ideas.

Ties to Economics

At Fourth, our problem-solving includes issues of economics, broadening our students' abilities to use math to address issues important to daily life. We also use math to teach biblical principles about the stewardship of our financial resources.
