The highest and most central skill to be acquired is reading with understanding. Fourth firmly believes that the quality of reading matter is as important as the quantity. Our goal is to set students on the path to reading with understanding the books that offer the most.

Because works of literature appeal to the imagination, engage the moral sensibilities, and draw out reflection on the central issues of life, they deserve a considered place in the curriculum.

We select quality literature to encourage students to know and understand reality by exploring people of other cultures, times and nations to understand and appreciate their roles, their contributions and shortcomings, as well as their divergent world views.

Among the wide variety of literature genres selected, poetry is intentionally emphasized throughout the curriculum, since it highlights the essential human capacity that allows us to break through the normal bounds of understanding and expression.

Because it's God’s story, the Bible provides the foundation for Fourth's literature curriculum. And though it is studied in depth in religious education instruction, its integration is important in the study of literature past and present.

The Houghton Mifflin Reading series is our basic reading text, supplemented by the Open Court series in Grade 1, and with carefully selected quality trade books at all grade levels.
